Clarion Angelfish

The Clarion Angelfish occupies a rarefied position in the marine aquarium world — a species whose vivid orange body, electric-blue fin accents, and extreme geographic limitation combine to produce one of the most sought-after reef fish on the planet. Holacanthus clarionensis is endemic to the Revillagigedo Islands, a volcanic archipelago roughly 400 kilometers off the Pacific coast of Mexico, with small satellite populations around the southern tip of Baja California and Clipperton Island. This narrow distribution, combined with Mexico's strict collection regulations, means that legally obtained Clarion Angelfish enter the aquarium trade in vanishingly small numbers each year.

In the aquarium, the Clarion Angelfish is a commanding presence. Adults reach approximately 10 inches and develop the species' full color intensity by age 3 to 4: a uniform warm orange across the body with striking blue edging on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Juveniles display a different pattern entirely — darker orange with blue vertical bars that gradually fade as the fish matures. This ontogenetic color shift is one of the pleasures of raising a Clarion from sub-adult to full maturity; you are essentially watching a different fish reveal itself over the course of several years.

A 180-gallon aquarium is the minimum for an adult Clarion Angelfish. The species is semi-aggressive, establishing a clear territory within the tank and defending it from similarly shaped interlopers — particularly other large angelfish. In a sufficiently spacious system (300 gallons or more), a Clarion can coexist with tangs, wrasses, and other robust reef species. Reef compatibility carries the standard angelfish caveat: while many specimens leave corals alone, some will nip at LPS polyps and clam mantles. A well-fed Clarion with ample grazing opportunities is less likely to develop this behavior, but no guarantee can be made.

Diet is omnivorous, combining marine algae, sponge-based prepared foods, frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality angelfish pellets. In the wild, Clarion Angelfish feed heavily on sponges and tunicates, so preparations that include these ingredients — New Life Spectrum and LRS are two brands we recommend — provide optimal nutrition. Feed two to three times daily in small portions, which also reduces the likelihood of coral nipping between meals.

Water parameters should match standard reef conditions: 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity of 1.023 to 1.026, and stable alkalinity. The slightly cooler temperature preference reflects the Clarion's subtropical origin — the Revillagigedo Islands sit at the boundary between tropical and temperate Pacific waters. Robust protein skimming and 10 to 15 percent weekly water changes maintain the pristine conditions this species deserves.

With a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, the Clarion Angelfish is a decade-plus investment that rewards patience. Its coloration deepens, its personality solidifies, and its presence in the aquarium becomes more impressive with every passing year. For the serious marine collector, few species deliver the same combination of beauty, rarity, and long-term satisfaction.
