Evaluating Pufferfish Before Purchase
A healthy pufferfish should have a rounded belly (not pinched or sunken), bright clear eyes, and smooth unblemished skin. Watch for active, curious behaviour — a healthy puffer will investigate its surroundings and often approach the front of the tank when a person is nearby. Avoid puffers with dark stress colouration, rapid breathing, or a puffed-up posture, as chronic inflation is a serious stress indicator. Crucially, check the beak: pufferfish teeth grow continuously, and an overgrown or misaligned beak can prevent feeding. Ask the seller what the fish has been eating and whether the beak has been maintained with hard-shelled foods.

Pufferfish are not community fish. Most species are aggressive, fin-nipping, and often outright predatory toward tankmates. They require dedicated species-only setups in the vast majority of cases.
