Brown Knife Fish

The Brown Knife Fish, also known as the Brown Ghost Knife Fish, is an elegant and underappreciated member of the Apteronotidae family. While it lacks the dramatic black-and-white contrast of its famous cousin the Black Ghost Knife Fish, the Brown Knife Fish possesses a refined, subtle beauty — a warm chocolate-brown body with a smooth, elongated profile and the characteristic undulating anal fin that allows knife fish to hover, reverse, and maneuver with uncanny precision. For aquarists who appreciate understated elegance over flashy coloration, this species is a revelation.

Like all members of Apteronotus, the Brown Knife Fish possesses an electrosensory system that generates weak electric fields for navigation and communication. In a dimly lit aquarium, you can observe the fish actively scanning its environment, tilting and pivoting to map obstacles and locate prey with its biological sonar. This behavior makes knife fish among the most intellectually engaging species to observe, as their movements clearly indicate active cognition and spatial awareness.

A minimum 75-gallon aquarium is recommended for an adult Brown Knife Fish, which can reach approximately fourteen inches. Temperature should be maintained between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Provide plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, PVC pipes, or dense plantings — knife fish are nocturnal and need secure retreats during daylight hours. Dim lighting or floating plants to reduce light intensity will encourage the fish to emerge and feed during viewing hours.

Diet should include frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, small earthworms, and sinking pellets. Live foods like blackworms are excellent for encouraging natural hunting behavior. Feed primarily in the evening when the fish is most active.
