Red Arowana (Blood Red)

The Blood Red Arowana is the crown jewel of Borneo's ancient waterways — a fish whose deep crimson coloration has captivated collectors and cultural enthusiasts for centuries. Among the many red variants of Scleropages formosus, the Blood Red designation is reserved for specimens exhibiting the most intense, uniform red pigmentation across the entire body, including the gill plates, fins, and scales. This is not an orange-tinted fish marketed as red; it is a genuine blood-crimson animal that darkens and intensifies with age.

Our current specimen originates from a CITES-certified breeding program in Borneo, where the finest Blood Red genetics have been carefully maintained across multiple generations. The fish arrives with full microchip documentation, lineage records, and health certification. At approximately twenty-eight inches, it is approaching its full adult size of thirty-five inches and displays the deep, saturated coloration that distinguishes a premium Blood Red from the more common Chili Red or Orange Red variants.

Housing a Blood Red Arowana requires a minimum 300-gallon aquarium, though we recommend 500 gallons or larger for long-term comfort. Temperature should be maintained between 79 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Many experienced keepers use tanning agents or Indian almond leaves to create the slightly acidic, tea-stained water conditions that can enhance red pigmentation. The tank must have a secure lid — this is a powerful fish fully capable of launching itself out of an uncovered aquarium.

Feeding is straightforward: gut-loaded insects, market shrimp, and quality floating pellets form the dietary backbone. Some breeders supplement with colour-enhancing foods rich in astaxanthin and carotenoids to support pigment intensity, though genetics remain the primary driver of coloration.
