Ranchu Goldfish
Carassius auratus
Carassius auratus
The Red Cap Oranda Goldfish is one of the most visually striking and immediately recognisable varieties of fancy goldfish — a snow-white fish crowned with a vibrant, raspberry-red wen that sits atop the head like a living cap. The contrast between the pure white body and the deep red head growth is so dramatic that the Red Cap Oranda has become an icon of ornamental fishkeeping, featured in art, advertising, and aquarium displays worldwide. Unlike other Oranda colour varieties where the wen matches the body colour, the Red Cap's appeal lies entirely in the separation of colour — a white canvas with a single, brilliant red accent. The Fish Collection sources our Red Cap Orandas from breeders who have stabilised this colour pattern over multiple generations, ensuring the white body remains clean and the red cap develops with depth and uniformity.

The Oranda is distinguished from other fancy goldfish by its prominent wen — the fleshy growth that covers the head and sometimes extends to the gill plates and cheeks. In the Red Cap variety, the wen is the sole carrier of red pigmentation, creating the signature look. Wen development begins at around six months of age and continues for several years, with the growth becoming more pronounced and textured as the fish matures. A well-developed Red Cap wen should be vibrant crimson, evenly textured, and substantial enough to give the fish its characteristic regal appearance without obstructing vision or gill function.
What separates the Oranda from its close relative the Ranchu is the presence of a dorsal fin. This gives the Oranda better swimming ability and a more upright, graceful swimming posture than the dorsal-less Ranchu. The body should be deep, egg-shaped, and well-proportioned, with flowing fins that complement the wen without being so long that they impede movement. Our current Red Cap Oranda displays the balanced body proportions, clean white coloration, and developing red wen that mark a quality specimen with strong potential for continued improvement.
Housing requirements match those of other fancy goldfish. A minimum 30-gallon aquarium for a single adult, with gentle filtration, stable temperature between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and pH of 7.0 to 8.4. The wen tissue is susceptible to bacterial infection if water quality deteriorates, making consistent maintenance particularly important for Orandas. Weekly water changes of twenty-five to thirty percent are the baseline; more frequent changes may be needed in smaller tanks or with multiple fish.
Diet should centre on high-quality sinking or slow-sinking pellets formulated for fancy goldfish, supplemented with blanched vegetables (peas, spinach, zucchini), frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Colour-enhancing foods containing astaxanthin and spirulina can intensify the red cap over time. Feed small amounts multiple times daily, and consider gel foods to minimise the air ingestion that contributes to buoyancy problems in deep-bodied goldfish.
The Fish Collection ships all goldfish in insulated, temperature-regulated containers with our unconditional live arrival guarantee.
