The Aba Aba possesses a unique elongated, eel-like body with a continuous dorsal fin that runs the length of its back and provides the undulating propulsion characteristic of knife fish locomotion. It navigates using a sophisticated electrosensory system that generates weak electrical fields to map its environment — a biological sonar that allows it to hunt with devastating precision in turbid water. In an aquarium setting, watching this fish hunt is a singular experience.
Housing is the primary challenge. A minimum 300-gallon aquarium is the absolute baseline for juvenile specimens, but adults require 500 gallons or larger — ideally a custom-built system of eight feet or more in length. Temperature should be maintained between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Filtration must be massively overspecified; we recommend sump systems rated for three times the tank volume.
This is an extremely predatory fish. Any tankmate that can fit in its considerable mouth will be consumed. Even large fish are not safe, as the Aba Aba becomes increasingly territorial and aggressive with age. A species-only setup is the only responsible recommendation.
Diet consists of live and frozen fish, shrimp, earthworms, and large pellets.
