The Albino Alligator Gar is a living fossil wrapped in ivory — a fish whose lineage predates the dinosaurs, now presented in a striking leucistic form that transforms an already imposing predator into something genuinely otherworldly. Atractosteus spatula is the largest freshwater fish in North America, capable of exceeding six feet in length and 200 pounds in the wild. The albino variant, with its pale cream-to-white body and pinkish-red eyes, represents an exceedingly rare genetic expression that occurs in fewer than one in ten thousand wild hatches. In the aquarium, the Albino Alligator Gar is a surprisingly calm presence. Despite its fearsome appearance — the broad, alligator-like snout packed with needle-sharp teeth — it spends much of its time hovering motionless near the surface, occasionally drifting forward with subtle undulations of its abbreviated dorsal fin. Feeding is dramatic and efficient: the gar positions itself alongside prey, then executes a lightning-fast lateral snap that is among the quickest strike mechanisms in the freshwater world. Diet should include live feeder fish from quarantined sources, large shrimp, smelt, and eventually whole fish appropriate to the gar's size. We begin weaning our juveniles onto frozen silversides and prawns early to simplify long-term feeding logistics.

Water chemistry is one of the Alligator Gar's greatest strengths from a husbandry perspective. This species tolerates a remarkably broad range of conditions — temperatures from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, pH from 6.5 to 8.0, and moderate to hard water. They can even tolerate brackish conditions, reflecting their natural habitat in coastal bayous and estuaries. Filtration should be robust and oversized; canister filters rated for twice the tank volume, or a sump system, will handle the considerable bioload of a large predatory fish.

The Alligator Gar has undergone a significant conservation reappraisal in recent years. Once vilified as a trash fish and actively culled in many states, it is now recognized as a keystone predator essential to healthy river ecosystems. Several states have implemented strict harvest regulations, and captive breeding programs — including the lines from which our specimens descend — play a role in maintaining genetic diversity.
