Bumblebee Catfish

The Bumblebee Catfish is one of the most charming and accessible catfish species in the freshwater hobby — a compact, boldly patterned fish that brings genuine character to medium-sized aquarium setups without demanding the massive infrastructure of its larger relatives. Pseudopimelodus bufonius earns its common name from the striking alternating bands of dark brown or black and bright yellow that wrap around its body, creating a pattern unmistakably reminiscent of its namesake insect. Despite its small stature, the Bumblebee Catfish exhibits all the classic catfish behaviors — nocturnal foraging, barbel-driven prey detection, and the sudden burst-feeding strikes that make catfish so captivating to watch at feeding time.

Native to river systems across South America, Pseudopimelodus bufonius inhabits rocky substrates and fallen timber in moderate-current environments. In the aquarium, replicate these conditions with a layout of driftwood, caves, and rock formations that provide the secure hiding spots this shy, nocturnal species requires. A bare-bottom or fine sand substrate works best, and moderate water flow from a quality canister filter or hang-on-back unit maintains the oxygenation and water quality the Bumblebee Catfish prefers.

Feeding is straightforward once the fish has acclimated. Bumblebee Catfish are carnivores that accept a variety of frozen and prepared foods including bloodworms, brine shrimp, sinking carnivore pellets, and chopped earthworms. Feed once daily in the evening or after lights-out to align with the species' natural crepuscular and nocturnal feeding rhythm. While the Bumblebee Catfish will consume very small tankmates such as neon tetras, it is generally peaceful toward fish too large to eat and makes a surprisingly good community member when housed with appropriately sized companions.

Water parameters are undemanding: 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.5 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Weekly water changes of 20 to 25 percent maintain water quality in a 50-gallon setup. The Bumblebee Catfish is a hardy species that tolerates a range of conditions, making it forgiving for intermediate-level keepers who are still refining their husbandry skills.
