Clown Loach
Chromobotia macracanthus
Syncrossus hymenophysa
The Tiger Loach is one of the most visually striking members of the Botiidae family — a bold, energetic bottom-dweller adorned with dramatic vertical bands of dark brown to black over a golden-yellow base that intensifies with age and proper care. Syncrossus hymenophysa is native to the river systems of the Mekong Basin and the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, where it inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams with rocky and sandy substrates. At The Fish Collection, we source our Tiger Loaches from trusted Southeast Asian exporters who collect specimens from sustainable populations.

Reaching up to 12 inches in captivity, the Tiger Loach is significantly larger than many commonly kept loach species and requires a minimum 75-gallon aquarium to thrive. The tank should feature a sandy or fine gravel substrate, as Tiger Loaches spend considerable time foraging along the bottom and can damage their sensitive barbels on coarse material. Abundant hiding spots created from smooth rocks, driftwood caves, and PVC pipes are essential — these fish establish territories and retreat to cover when stressed or during the day. Moderate to strong water flow from powerheads replicates their natural riverine habitat.
Water parameters should be maintained between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. The Tiger Loach prefers soft to moderately hard water with excellent filtration. Weekly water changes of 25 to 30 percent are recommended, as this species is sensitive to elevated nitrate levels. Good oxygenation is important — consider adding an airstone or ensuring surface agitation from the filter return.
Temperament is semi-aggressive. Tiger Loaches establish clear dominance hierarchies and will chase, nip, and harass subordinate individuals and other bottom-dwelling species. They are best kept in groups of five or more to distribute aggression, or as a single specimen if tank size is limited. Tankmates should be robust, mid-water to upper-water species that will not compete for bottom territory. Avoid slow-moving, long-finned fish that may be harassed.
Diet is omnivorous. Tiger Loaches eagerly accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. They are also excellent snail predators — a single Tiger Loach will eliminate a pest snail infestation within weeks, making them one of the most effective biological control options available.
