The Golden Basslet is the holy grail of the marine aquarium hobby — a tiny, luminous jewel of a fish that commands prices rivaling luxury automobiles, not because of size or ferocity, but because of its staggering rarity and the near-impossibility of collecting it alive. Liopropoma aureum inhabits the deep reef walls of the Caribbean at depths between 150 and 250 meters, well beyond the range of conventional scuba diving. Reaching these fish requires specialized mixed-gas rebreather technology, hours of staged decompression, and the expertise to capture a 3-inch fish on a vertical wall in near-total darkness without killing it during the ascent. The handful of specimens that make it to market each year represent the pinnacle of deep-sea fish collection.

This specimen was collected by a licensed deep-reef specialist operating in the Caribbean and has been acclimated through a careful multi-stage decompression protocol. It is currently feeding on enriched frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood in our quarantine facility — a critical indicator of long-term survivability.

The fish itself is breathtaking in its simplicity: a uniform, intense golden-orange body that glows under reef lighting like a bar of polished gold, with translucent fins edged in electric blue. At just 3 inches maximum size, it can be housed in a surprisingly modest aquarium — a 40-gallon reef tank with established live rock provides ideal conditions. Water parameters should match standard reef specifications: 72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, pH 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity 1.025, and stable alkalinity.

Despite its extreme price, the Golden Basslet is not a difficult fish to keep once acclimated. It is shy by nature and prefers dimly lit caves and overhangs — provide plenty of small crevices and rockwork retreats. Tankmates should be peaceful and non-competitive: small gobies, assessors, and other docile reef species. Avoid aggressive or boisterous fish that might stress or outcompete the basslet for food. Feed multiple small meals daily of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and finely diced seafood.
