Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Cyprinus rubrofuscus
The Platinum Ogon Koi is pure, liquid silver brought to life — a single-coloured metallic koi whose entire body gleams with an unbroken, mirror-like platinum sheen that transforms a pond into something approaching a gallery installation. There is no pattern to evaluate, no colour balance to debate. The Platinum Ogon succeeds or fails on one criterion alone: the uniformity, depth, and brilliance of its metallic lustre. A great Platinum Ogon is flawless — every scale reflecting light identically, the head smooth and luminous, the fins translucent with a metallic base that catches sunlight and scatters it across the water's surface. The Fish Collection sources our Platinum Ogon from Japanese breeders who have specialised in the Hikarimuji (single-colour metallic) class for decades, selecting only specimens with the skin quality that serious collectors recognise as exceptional.

The Ogon class was developed in the 1940s by breeder Sawata Aoki, who spent over two decades refining a single golden metallic koi that would eventually become the foundation of all modern Ogon varieties. The Platinum Ogon — a silver-white metallic variant — emerged later and quickly became one of the most popular koi varieties worldwide, prized for its dramatic visual impact and relative ease of appreciation. Unlike multi-coloured varieties where pattern evaluation requires trained judgment, the Platinum Ogon's beauty is immediately accessible to everyone. It is the variety most likely to make a non-koi-keeper stop and stare.
What separates a premium Platinum Ogon from an ordinary one is skin quality. The metallic sheen should be uniform from head to tail with no dull patches, no scale irregularities, and no discolouration. The head — often the most telling indicator of quality — should be smooth and luminous, without the roughness or mottling that plagues lesser specimens. Body shape should be the classic koi torpedo: broad, powerful, and symmetrical. At 18 to 24 inches, our current specimen is in its prime growth phase, and its metallic lustre will continue to intensify as the fish matures and its scales thicken.
Pond requirements are standard for koi: minimum 1,000 gallons, robust filtration capable of handling the significant waste these fish produce, water temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and pH of 7.0 to 8.6. The Platinum Ogon is among the hardiest koi varieties and is an excellent choice for keepers new to the hobby who want a visually spectacular fish without the complexity of evaluating multi-coloured patterns. Its bright metallic body also makes it one of the most visible koi in a pond — easy to spot, easy to monitor for health, and easy to enjoy from a distance.
A Platinum Ogon Koi in a well-designed pond is one of the simplest and most effective ways to create visual drama in an outdoor water feature. The Fish Collection ships all koi in insulated, oxygen-saturated containers with our unconditional live arrival guarantee.
