Checkerboard Discus

The Checkerboard Discus is one of the most distinctive and visually complex patterned strains in the Discus world. Named for the grid-like arrangement of red and turquoise markings that cover the body in an almost tile-like mosaic, this strain takes the familiar Discus disc shape and transforms it into something that resembles hand-painted porcelain. Each fish is unique in its pattern distribution, making every specimen a one-of-a-kind work of living art.

The Checkerboard pattern emerged from careful crossbreeding of turquoise and red strains, with breeders selecting for increasingly defined, regular pattern spacing over many generations. The most prized specimens — the caliber we stock at The Fish Collection — display crisp, well-separated pattern elements with high contrast between the red-orange and blue-turquoise components. Muddy or blurred patterning indicates inferior genetics, and we reject any fish that does not meet our standard of clarity.

Care requirements are identical to all Discus strains: warm water between 82 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.0 to 7.0, soft water, and a minimum 75-gallon aquarium for a school. The Checkerboard is a gentle, social fish that should always be kept in groups of five or more. Tankmates must tolerate the elevated temperatures that Discus demand; cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, and Corydoras sterbai are among the classic compatible species.

Feeding follows standard Discus protocol: high-quality pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart preparations served in two to three small daily meals. Weekly water changes of 30 to 50 percent maintain the pristine conditions these fish require.
