The Dovii Cichlid is widely regarded as the most aggressive freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby — a title that Parachromis dovii has earned through sheer, unrelenting territorial dominance that few other species can match. Known colloquially as the Wolf Cichlid, this Central American predator combines a powerful, heavily muscled body with a temperament so ferocious that experienced keepers sometimes describe it as the fish equivalent of keeping a wolf in your living room. The Dovii's appearance is as imposing as its reputation. Coloration in males is a striking golden-green with blue-black spotting and an iridescent sheen that intensifies during territorial displays. Females are smaller, reaching around 18 inches, with a predominantly yellow body marked with black lateral banding. Both sexes are genuinely beautiful fish that command attention from across a room.

A 150-gallon aquarium is the absolute minimum for a single Dovii Cichlid, and this recommendation assumes a solo specimen. Attempting to keep a Dovii in a community setup requires a minimum of 300 gallons and an acceptance that injuries and fatalities among tankmates are likely. This is not hyperbole — Dovii Cichlids routinely kill tankmates that other aggressive species would merely chase. Pairing Dovii for breeding is particularly hazardous, as males frequently attack and kill unreceptive females. Many experienced Dovii breeders use dividers to protect the female until spawning behavior is confirmed.

Diet is straightforward: the Dovii is a voracious carnivore that accepts virtually any protein-based food. High-quality cichlid pellets form the staple, supplemented with frozen shrimp, silversides, smelt, and occasional live foods. Feed adults once daily, offering what can be consumed in a few minutes. The Dovii's feeding response is explosive and entertaining — one of the many behaviors that endears this species to keepers despite its challenging temperament.

Water parameters are forgiving: 75 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 7.0 to 8.0, and moderate to hard water. Dovii Cichlids are extremely hardy and tolerate a wide range of conditions. Robust filtration is essential given the species' large size and heavy feeding, with weekly water changes of 30 to 40 percent maintaining optimal conditions.
