Zebra Pleco
Hypancistrus zebra
Hypancistrus inspector
The Snowball Pleco is one of the most visually striking members of the Hypancistrus genus — a beautifully patterned catfish adorned with bright white polka dots scattered across a dark black-brown body, creating an effect that looks like fresh snowfall on dark earth. Also known as L201, this species hails from the Rio Negro in Brazil, one of the Amazon's most famous blackwater tributaries, and it brings a touch of that wild, tea-stained river system into the home aquarium.

At a maximum size of approximately seven inches, the Snowball Pleco is a manageable species that fits comfortably in a 40-gallon or larger aquarium. Unlike the common pleco sold in chain pet stores, the Snowball does not grow into a two-foot monster that overwhelms standard setups. It remains compact, beautifully patterned throughout its life, and is one of the most desirable plecos in the L-number collecting community.
Water chemistry should reflect the Rio Negro habitat: warm temperatures between 79 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately soft water. The Snowball Pleco is primarily nocturnal, so provide plenty of caves, driftwood crevices, and dark hiding spots. PVC pipe segments and ceramic caves work excellently as dedicated retreats.
An important distinction from common plecos: Hypancistrus species are not algae eaters. The Snowball Pleco is a carnivore/omnivore that requires protein-rich foods — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables like zucchini and cucumber. Relying on algae growth to feed this fish will result in malnutrition.
The Snowball Pleco is peaceful and compatible with most community species. It makes an excellent companion for discus, tetras, and other peaceful Amazonian species.
