Red Tail Catfish
Phractocephalus hemioliopterus
Leiarius marmoratus
The Marble Achara Catfish is a beautifully patterned Amazonian predator that bridges the gap between manageable large catfish and the true monster-fish league. Leiarius marmoratus is named for its striking marbled pattern of dark brown and tan blotches that cover the body and extend into the fins — a natural camouflage that makes it nearly invisible against the leaf-littered substrate of its native flooded forests. At The Fish Collection, we prize the Marble Achara for its combination of visual appeal, robust constitution, and a manageable adult size that, while still large, does not require the thousand-gallon infrastructure demanded by Red Tail Catfish or Shovelnose Tigers.

Adults reach approximately 24 inches in captivity — substantial enough to command attention in any large aquarium but compact enough to thrive permanently in a well-maintained 300-gallon system. This makes the Marble Achara an excellent choice for keepers who want the predatory catfish experience without committing to the extreme tank sizes that the largest pimelodids require. The fish's body plan is characteristically catfish: a broad, flattened head with prominent barbels, a powerful caudal fin for burst swimming, and a wide mouth capable of engulfing prey items with impressive speed.
The Marble Achara Catfish originates from the Amazon Basin, where it inhabits slow-moving tributaries, flooded forests, and the margins of major river channels. In these environments, it feeds on smaller fish, crustaceans, and fallen fruits — a varied diet that translates well to captive feeding regimens. We recommend a staple diet of high-quality sinking pellets supplemented with frozen prawns, silversides, and smelt. Live foods from quarantined sources can be offered as enrichment. Feed juveniles daily and adults every two to three days, adjusting quantities to maintain a healthy body condition without overfeeding.
Water parameters are straightforward and forgiving: 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.5 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The Marble Achara is a hardy species that adapts well to a range of conditions, making it somewhat more forgiving than more sensitive large catfish species. Filtration should be rated for at least twice the tank volume, and weekly water changes of 25 to 30 percent are standard practice. The aquarium should include hiding spots in the form of driftwood, caves, or PVC pipe sections, as the Marble Achara is primarily nocturnal and appreciates secure retreats during daylight hours.
Temperamentally, Leiarius marmoratus is semi-aggressive — less overtly predatory than a Shovelnose Tiger but fully capable of consuming any fish small enough to fit in its mouth. It coexists reasonably well with similarly sized or larger tankmates in spacious systems. Many keepers successfully house Marble Acharas alongside Arowana, large cichlids, and other catfish species in community predator setups of 300 gallons or more.
With a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, the Marble Achara Catfish offers a rewarding long-term keeping experience for advanced aquarists who appreciate the beauty and behavior of large South American catfish without the extreme space demands of the very largest species.
