The scales appear almost individually defined, each one catching light independently and creating a tessellated effect that is unlike anything seen in solid-coloured or iridescent bettas. The Samurai phenotype sits at the intersection of several genetic traits that Thai breeders have skillfully combined. The dragon gene produces the thick, opaque white or metallic scaling that forms the "armour" layer. Beneath this, colour genes provide the contrasting dark base that shows through the scale edges and fins, creating the two-toned warrior aesthetic.
