Betta splendens
The Samurai Betta is one of the most dramatic and sought-after phenotypes to emerge from Thailand's competitive breeding scene in recent years — a fish that combines the metallic dragon-scale gene with bold, contrasting colour patterns that evoke the lacquered armour of feudal Japanese warriors. The defining characteristic is the thick, opaque scaling across the body that creates a layered, armour-plated appearance, typically in metallic copper, silver, or gold overlaid on a base of deep blue, red, or black. The scales appear almost individually defined, each one catching light independently and creating a tessellated effect that is unlike anything seen in solid-coloured or iridescent bettas. The Fish Collection sources our Samurai Bettas from elite Thai breeders who have refined this phenotype to exhibition quality, selecting for maximum scale definition, colour contrast, and the aggressive finnage display that makes these fish living works of art.

The Samurai phenotype sits at the intersection of several genetic traits that Thai breeders have skillfully combined. The dragon gene produces the thick, opaque white or metallic scaling that forms the "armour" layer. Beneath this, colour genes provide the contrasting dark base that shows through the scale edges and fins, creating the two-toned warrior aesthetic. The best Samurai Bettas display a sharp delineation between the metallic scale coverage and the underlying colour — the armour should not fully obscure the base, nor should the base bleed through the scales unevenly. It is this balance of contrast that separates a premium Samurai from an ordinary dragon-scale betta.
One important health consideration with dragon-scale bettas, including the Samurai phenotype, is the potential for diamond eye — a condition where the thick scaling grows over the eye, partially or fully obstructing vision. This is a genetic predisposition in heavily scaled lines, not a disease. Reputable breeders select against extreme diamond eye, and The Fish Collection screens all our Samurai Bettas for clear eyes at time of listing. However, mild scale encroachment on the eye margin can develop as the fish matures. Affected fish adapt remarkably well, using lateral line senses and vibration detection to navigate and feed normally, but buyers should be aware of this possibility.
Housing follows standard betta protocol: a minimum 5-gallon heated, filtered aquarium with stable temperature between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, gentle flow, and pH of 6.5 to 7.5. The Samurai Betta's metallic scales show spectacularly under warm-toned LED lighting, which enhances the copper and gold elements of the armour plating. A dark substrate and background maximise contrast and make the fish appear to glow against its surroundings.
Diet is standard betta fare: quality pellets as the staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. The thick scaling of the Samurai phenotype can make it slightly more difficult to visually assess body condition — look at the belly profile from below rather than relying on side views, where the opaque scales can mask weight changes.
The Fish Collection ships all bettas individually in insulated containers with heat packs and our live arrival guarantee.
