We supplement with sheets of dried nori, spirulina-enriched flake, and frozen preparations that include marine algae. Temperament sits in the semi-aggressive range — typical for tangs. A Gem Tang will establish territory and may chase similarly shaped fish, particularly other tangs introduced after it has settled in. The standard approach is to add the Gem Tang last if you plan to keep multiple surgeonfish, or to introduce all tangs simultaneously in a sufficiently large system. Aggression is manageable and rarely escalates to injury in a properly sized aquarium with adequate structure.

Water parameters should track standard reef conditions: 74 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity around 1.025, and stable alkalinity. Gem Tangs are not unusually sensitive, but they do not tolerate nitrate spikes or sudden parameter swings — conditions that can trigger lateral line erosion, a disfiguring condition common in tangs kept in suboptimal water quality. Weekly water changes of 10 to 15 percent and a quality protein skimmer are essential.
