The Butterfly Koi — also known as Long-Fin Koi or Dragon Carp — is the variety that divides the koi world and enchants everyone else. With its dramatically elongated fins and tail that trail behind the body like silk ribbons in water, the Butterfly Koi moves through a pond with a grace and elegance that standard-fin koi simply cannot replicate. The Butterfly Koi's origin story is one of the hobby's most interesting. In the 1980s, a group of Indonesian long-finned carp of uncertain lineage were imported to a Japanese koi farm. Rather than discarding them, the breeder crossed them with high-quality Nishikigoi, producing offspring with the long fins of the Indonesian fish and the colour patterns of Japanese koi. The result was controversial — Japanese koi purists considered (and some still consider) Butterfly Koi to be outside the true Nishikigoi tradition, and they are not eligible for competition at traditional Japanese koi shows. Yet their popularity among pond keepers worldwide has been extraordinary, and they now command a significant and growing segment of the ornamental fish market. Whether they are "real" koi is a debate for purists; whether they are beautiful is not a debate at all.

The body should be well-proportioned — a common fault in lower-quality Butterfly Koi is a thin, elongated body that lacks the robust, torpedo-shaped form of a well-bred standard koi. Pond requirements are identical to standard koi: minimum 1,000 gallons with robust filtration, water temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and pH of 7.0 to 8.6. One consideration specific to Butterfly Koi is that their long fins can be damaged by rough pond edges, sharp decorations, or aggressive tankmates. A well-designed pond with smooth surfaces and compatible pondmates preserves the finnage that makes these fish special. Predator protection is also important — herons and raccoons can cause irreparable fin damage even if the fish survives the encounter.

Diet follows standard koi nutrition: high-quality koi pellets as the staple, supplemented with vegetables, fruit, and occasional protein treats. Colour-enhancing foods benefit any colour variety of Butterfly Koi, and a varied diet supports the fin growth that is the variety's defining feature.
