Albino Shark

The Albino Shark is a bold, eye-catching freshwater fish that combines the streamlined, shark-like silhouette of the Cyprinid family with a striking pure white to pale golden body and vivid red eyes — the hallmarks of true albinism. Epalzeorhynchos munense, commonly marketed as the Albino Shark or Albino Rainbow Shark variant, is native to the river systems of Southeast Asia, where it inhabits moderate-flow streams and rivers with rocky substrates and ample hiding spots. Reaching up to 12 inches in captivity, the Albino Shark is a substantial fish that requires a minimum 75-gallon aquarium with plenty of swimming space and well-defined territorial boundaries. The tank should feature a sandy or fine gravel substrate with abundant rockwork, driftwood caves, and PVC tubes that create multiple hiding spots and territory markers. This species is highly territorial toward bottom-dwelling fish and conspecifics, and providing visual barriers through tank decor is essential for managing aggression in a community setup.

Water parameters are forgiving: temperature between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.5 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The Albino Shark adapts to a wide range of conditions, making it one of the more resilient large aquarium fish available. Filtration should be robust with moderate to strong flow, and weekly water changes of 20 to 25 percent maintain optimal conditions.

Diet is omnivorous. Albino Sharks eagerly consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched zucchini, and spirulina-based foods. They are active algae grazers that will methodically clean rock surfaces and driftwood in the aquarium. This grazing behavior, combined with their striking appearance, makes them both functional and ornamental. Feed once or twice daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom before more aggressive surface-feeding tankmates consume everything.

Temperament is semi-aggressive, particularly as the fish matures. Juveniles are relatively peaceful, but adults establish firm territories and will chase, ram, and harass other bottom-dwelling species. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium exceeds 150 gallons with extensive visual barriers. Mid-water and surface-dwelling tankmates like large barbs, rainbowfish, and medium cichlids are generally unaffected by the shark's territorial behavior.
