What Is Fin Rot?
Fin rot is a bacterial infection that progressively destroys the fin tissue of freshwater and saltwater aquarium fish. It is the most common disease in the hobby — and the most preventable. In nearly every case, fin rot is a direct consequence of poor water quality. Elevated ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate weakens the fish's immune system and damages the delicate fin membrane, allowing opportunistic bacteria to invade.
The pathogens responsible are gram-negative bacteria already present in every aquarium: Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Flavobacterium columnare. These are not exotic organisms introduced from outside — they are part of the normal aquatic microbiome that becomes pathogenic when conditions deteriorate. Treating fin rot therefore requires addressing the cause (water quality) as well as the symptom (the infection itself).
Bacterial vs. Fungal Fin Rot
True fin rot is bacterial, but fungal infections can look similar:
- Bacterial fin rot: Fin edges appear ragged, frayed, or uneven. The margin may show a white, opaque edge or reddish-brown discolouration from inflammation. Progression is from the fin edge inward toward the body. Fins look like they are dissolving or being eaten away.
- Fungal fin infection: Appears as white, cottony growths on fin edges or the body. Fungal infections often colonise tissue already damaged by bacterial fin rot — the two conditions can co-occur. True fungal infections are less common than bacterial and are usually secondary.
The distinction matters for treatment: bacterial fin rot responds to antibiotics and clean water; fungal infections require antifungal medication (methylene blue, Pimafix, or prescription antifungals). When both are present, treat the bacterial infection first — the fungus will often resolve once the underlying bacterial damage stops.
Root Causes
Fin rot is almost always triggered by one or more of the following:
- Ammonia and nitrite exposure: Any detectable ammonia or nitrite chemically burns fin tissue and suppresses the immune system. Even 0.25 ppm ammonia sustained over days is enough to initiate fin rot in sensitive species like Bettas and fancy goldfish.
- High nitrate: Chronic nitrate above 40 ppm degrades fin health over time. Keep nitrate below 20 ppm through regular water changes.
- Overcrowding: Too many fish in too little water concentrates waste, increases aggression, and creates stress — all fin rot risk factors.
- Fin nipping tank mates: Physical damage from fin nippers (barbs, serpae tetras, aggressive cichlids) creates entry points for bacteria. The damage looks like fin rot but is mechanical — removing the aggressor resolves it.
- Temperature stress: Temperatures below the species' preferred range suppress immune function. Bettas in unheated tanks are particularly vulnerable.
- Sharp decorations: Rough rocks, broken ceramic ornaments, and unfinished plastic plants can tear fins, creating infection sites. Use only smooth decorations and live or silk plants in tanks with long-finned fish.
Staging Severity: Mild, Moderate, Severe
Accurate staging determines the appropriate treatment response:
Treating Mild Fin Rot
Mild fin rot shows as slightly ragged or uneven fin edges with minimal tissue loss. The fin membrane may look slightly transparent or frayed at the tips. At this stage, clean water alone is often curative:
- Test water immediately. Record ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and temperature.
- Perform a 50 % water change with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water.
- Continue 25–50 % daily water changes for 7–10 days until ammonia and nitrite are stable at 0 ppm and nitrate is below 20 ppm.
- Add Indian almond leaves (1 medium leaf per 5 gallons) — tannins provide mild antibacterial and antifungal properties.
- Identify and correct the root cause: fix the filter, reduce stocking, remove fin nippers, add a heater, or increase water change frequency.
Expect visible improvement within 7–14 days. New fin growth appears as clear or slightly white membrane extending from the damaged edges.
Treating Moderate Fin Rot
Moderate fin rot shows significant tissue loss (25–50 % of a fin), redness or inflammation at the receding edge, and possibly a white margin marking the advancing infection line. Clean water alone may not be sufficient:
- All mild treatment steps above.
- Add aquarium salt: dissolve 1 teaspoon per gallon of tank water in a cup of water, then add to the tank gradually. Maintain for 7–10 days.
- Alternatively, use Seachem StressGuard, which contains a polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer that binds to damaged tissue and provides a protective barrier while the immune system fights the infection.
- If no improvement after 7 days of salt treatment, escalate to antibiotics (see severe protocol).
Salt caution: Some species (Corydoras, Otocinclus, most Plecos, scaleless fish) are salt-sensitive. For these fish, skip salt and proceed directly to antibiotics if clean water fails.
Treating Severe Fin Rot
Severe fin rot has reached the fin base or body. Fin tissue is almost completely gone, the body may show reddened ulcers or open sores, and the fish is lethargic with clamped remaining fins. This is a medical emergency:
- Move the fish to a hospital tank — a bare-bottom 5–10 gallon tank with a heater, sponge filter, and no substrate or decorations.
- Treat with kanamycin (Seachem Kanaplex: 1 measure per 5 gallons every 48 hours for 3 doses) or erythromycin (API E.M. Erythromycin: 1 packet per 10 gallons every 24 hours for 4 days).
- Perform a 30 % water change before each re-dose.
- Maintain elevated temperature (78–80 °F) to support immune function.
- If the fish is still eating, soak food in garlic guard or a vitamin supplement to support recovery.
- After the antibiotic course, continue daily water changes in the hospital tank for an additional 7 days before returning the fish to the display tank.
Hospital Tank Protocol
A dedicated hospital tank prevents medicating the entire display tank (which disrupts biological filtration and stresses healthy fish):
- 5–10 gallon tank, bare bottom, with a pre-cycled sponge filter and an adjustable heater.
- No substrate, plants, or decorations — bare surfaces are easier to keep clean and allow you to monitor the fish's condition precisely.
- Dim lighting to reduce stress.
- Remove activated carbon from the filter during medication — carbon adsorbs antibiotics.
- Test water daily: ammonia and nitrite must remain at 0 ppm. The combination of no substrate and medication can disrupt the nitrogen cycle — be prepared for daily water changes.
Fin Regrowth: What to Expect
Once the infection is controlled and water quality stabilised, fin regrowth begins within 1–2 weeks:
- New growth appears as clear or slightly translucent membrane extending from the damaged edges. This is delicate tissue — do not mistake it for continued disease.
- Over 2–6 weeks, the new membrane develops colour and structural rays.
- Severely damaged fins may not regrow to their original shape or length. Fins that were rotted to the base may regrow partially or with slight deformity.
- Long-finned varieties (Halfmoon Bettas, fancy goldfish) take longer to regrow and may develop slightly different fin shapes after severe damage.
Support regrowth with excellent water quality (0/0/below 10 ppm), a varied, nutritious diet with vitamin supplementation, and stable temperature within the species' preferred range.
Preventing Fin Rot
- Maintain water quality: Weekly 25–30 % water changes, ammonia and nitrite always at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm. This single measure prevents the vast majority of fin rot cases.
- Avoid overcrowding: Follow the one-inch-per-gallon rule as a very rough minimum, and research the specific needs of each species.
- Remove aggressive tank mates: Fin nippers create the wounds that bacteria exploit. Separate aggressive fish immediately.
- Use appropriate filtration: The filter should cycle the tank volume 4–6 times per hour for community tanks, 8–10 times for heavily stocked tanks. See our filter guide for sizing.
