The Cobalt Blue Discus is a stunning example of selective breeding at its finest — a fish that transforms any warm, soft-water aquarium into a living canvas of electric blue. Unlike the Blue Diamond variety, which presents a uniform metallic sheen, the Cobalt Blue features intricate striations of deep cobalt overlaid on a slightly lighter base, creating a layered, almost three-dimensional visual effect that shifts and shimmers as the fish moves through the water column.

Discus are schooling fish by nature, and the Cobalt Blue is no exception. We strongly recommend purchasing groups of five or more to see natural social behavior and reduce individual stress. In a properly maintained school, these fish establish gentle hierarchies, display vibrant feeding responses, and engage in the fascinating pair-bonding rituals that make Discus one of the most behaviorally rewarding freshwater species to observe.

Housing requires a minimum 75-gallon aquarium for a small group, with larger tanks always preferred. Temperature is critical — Discus demand a narrow band of 82 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly warmer than most tropical community setups. pH should be maintained between 6.0 and 7.0, with very soft to moderately soft water. Filtration must be efficient but gentle; Discus dislike strong current. Sponge filters or spray bars that diffuse outflow work exceptionally well.

Diet should include high-quality Discus-specific pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart preparations. Feed two to three times daily in smaller portions rather than one large feeding. Variety is the key to vibrant coloration and robust immune function.

Weekly water changes of 30 to 50 percent are non-negotiable with Discus. These fish are sensitive to dissolved organics, and pristine water quality is the single most important factor in long-term success.
